PLAYING WITH TIME

Simone Baldasseroni initially captured the spotlight as a musical prodigy. At just 16, he released his debut music album, Dejavu, which was awarded the disco d’oro (gold album) in Italy, marking the beginning of a promising music career. However, it was his decision to transition into acting that truly showcased his versatility and ambition. In Vestal’s previous interview with Simone, we explored his early forays into both music and acting. Nowadays, his role as Rigel in Netflix's film adaptation of the bestselling novel The Tearsmith has since propelled him into the international limelight, earning widespread acclaim and cementing his reputation as a rising star. We’ve caught up with the 25-year-old actor once again to discuss his newfound success and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

Violeta Nicola __ Please tell me a bit about your journey into acting and what inspired you to pursue this career.

Simone Baldasseroni __ I began when I was 16 and had the opportunity to study at the Academy of Actors in Rome. This was around the time I released my first song. Within one year, it turned into a disco d’oro (gold album). At that point, I was at a crossroads between continuing with music or diving into acting. I chose music because it was taking off. Then, in what felt like a twist of fate, I got to work with one of my favorite Italian actors, Marco Giallini. It was an incredible experience, and the film we did together, È per il tuo bene (translated: It's for your own good), gained traction on Amazon Prime. Suddenly, I started receiving calls from various agencies interested in representing me. One thing led to another, and here we are today.

VN __  When we talked in 2022, we discussed your music career. How did your perspective on your music career change since then?

SB __ I was in a completely different place back in 2022. It's surreal to reflect on that conversation and have another one now under such different circumstances. [laughs] While my focus right now is on acting and where that path will lead me, music has always been in my blood. I grew up listening to and creating music, so it isn’t something I’m stepping away from. It’s just that life has different phases. I feel like I’ve lived three different lives already—first as a chef when I was a kid, then as a singer, and now as an actor. Who knows, maybe tomorrow I’ll be an engineer! [laughs] You never know what’s next. What’s most important is being happy with what you’re doing. I’m very blessed to love what I do. Some people end up in careers they don’t enjoy, which is heartbreaking. That’s why I try to remain grateful and pray often. It’s so important to appreciate where you are.

VN __ What did the process of getting the role of Rigel and preparing for it look like?

SB __ When I got the role, I had about a month and a half to prepare. It felt pretty daunting at the time because The Tearsmith is a bestselling book here in Italy and I wanted to make sure fans would be happy with my portrayal of Rigel. I took the preparation very seriously and started by immersing myself in the story. I listened to the audiobook, covering my eyes to focus better, and finished it within a week. Physically, I also had to train hard with a personal trainer since Rigel is portrayed as being in great shape. It was a lot of work, but I believe that effort always pays off. I remember stepping onto the set every day and instantly feeling like I was in Rigel’s shoes the moment I arrived.

VN __ The movie The Tearsmith was well received. Did you expect it to blow up in the way it did?

SB __ Not in the way it did. Once Netflix got involved with the production, I started considering the possibilities. I hoped for it to do well, but I didn't expect it to blow up on the scale it did. The movie became an instant number one in multiple countries, staying there for a long time. It was surreal. I never thought this would be possible.

VN __ Some actors create playlists for their characters to get into their mindset more easily. What helped you get into the character of Rigel?

SB __ I created a playlist as well, with songs to help me get into Rigel’s mindset. Music has always been a part of my life, so this felt very natural.

Every day, the first thing I did in the morning was listen to that music. For Rigel, I also practiced what’s known as the “work of the animal.” I envisioned Rigel as a wolf, and thinking about that really helped me stay in character. When you’re shooting all day and feeling tired but need to stay focused on the scene, channeling that animal imagery can help bring you back to your character.

VN __ Fans are saying they would love for you to star in a TV show adaptation of The Tearsmith to explore Rigel’s character in more depth. What are your thoughts on that?

SB __ I would be open to that. It’s up to production and other logistics, but if the opportunity arises, I would be honored to. Having spent a lot of time with Rigel, I feel deeply connected to the character—he's become a part of me, and I’m a part of him. I believe a TV show could address more questions that the audience might have, providing a deeper dive into the details of the book.

VN __ How do you choose the projects you want to be involved in? What factors are most important to you?

SB __ I feel fortunate to be in a position now where I have more input into the projects I choose. When you first start out, it's often about what comes your way, but now I can step back and think about the career I want to build through my future roles. I’d love to explore action movies, thrillers, and maybe even a TV series. I have a lot of discussions with my managers about it because every project plays a significant role in shaping your career.

VN __ Who are some actors you would love to get the opportunity to work with?

SB __ Honestly, there are many. Some of my favorites are Dylan O'Brien, Cillian Murphy, and Penn Badgley. I’m eager to work with as many talented artists as possible.

VN __ What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of acting?

SB __ I try to diversify as much as possible. I enjoy playing chess and poker, and I’m passionate about watching and playing football. I follow all the major leagues, from Spain to Italy to Germany.

I also love collecting vinyl records, as you can see from my wall. [points to the wall behind him] Right now, I’m focused on immersing myself in all aspects of culture. I want to visit new places, read books, and see new movies.

VN __ Where would you like to shoot a potential project?

SB __ It’s a tough question because there are so many great places. I really like Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Sweden—so many wonderful spots in Europe. Outside of Europe, I’d love to shoot in Tokyo or anywhere in Japan.

VN __ What is next for you in your acting journey? Are there any projects fans should be on the lookout for?

SB __ I have some projects lined up, but I can't reveal too much at the moment. There should be some news soon, though. I have two projects in the pipeline, but that’s all I can share for now. [laughs] As for what’s next in my acting journey, I’m still figuring that out. At 25, I feel like I’m just getting started. I’m working on it and want to be careful with the direction I take. Thankfully, I have two amazing managers who are guiding me every day, so I’m confident I’ll make the right choices.
